Should I schedule a race in a critical training week?

If you schedule an in-plan race during one of your critical training weeks, then your long run will be overridden to prepare you for the race effort. If you keep the race in your plan, your scheduled long run will be moved earlier in the week, and your distance will be cut back to a Pseudo Long Run (PLR). Since these long runs are so important for preparing you to race the marathon, we want to offer some options on how to handle:

1. If you have not registered for the in-plan race, see if you can find another race that works in your schedule that doesn't conflict with your training plan.

2. If you don't plan on racing all out, you can use the race as a glorified long run to complete your mileage. You may need to add some miles on before or after the race. If you want this option, then remove the race from your plan.

3. Refer to the PLR in your race week for further instructions.
